Day-old chicks are the single decision that constrains everything after it: a weak or mis-sexed batch cannot be fixed by good feeding. This page lists chicks from sellers on Poultrix Hub, with the price per chick, the minimum order and the delivery charge shown before you commit.

Chick prices move with hatchery supply and the season, and they are quoted per chick — so compare the total landed cost, not the headline figure. A cheaper chick that arrives a day late, dehydrated, or short of the count you paid for is the most expensive input on a poultry farm.

Order in advance where you can. Hatcheries set batches weeks ahead, and the sellers who can deliver on the exact day you have a brooder ready are usually the ones who were told about it early.

What to check before you buy

  • Confirm the breed and the strain, not just 'broiler' or 'layer'

    Growth rate, feed conversion and laying persistence differ between strains. A seller who cannot name the strain often cannot tell you where the chicks came from either.

  • Ask how the chicks are sexed and what the tolerance is

    For layers, sexing accuracy decides how many cockerels you will be feeding for nothing. Get the seller's stated accuracy in writing before you order.

  • Agree the count and check it on arrival

    Count the chicks in front of the person delivering them. Most disputes come from a count nobody verified at handover.

  • Have the brooder at temperature before they arrive

    Chicks cannot regulate their own temperature for the first week. A brooder warmed after delivery has already cost you the first day.

How many day-old chicks should a first-time farmer start with?

Start with a batch you can brood properly in the space you already have, rather than the biggest batch you can afford. Most new farmers are limited by brooding space and attention in week one, not by capital, and a small batch raised well teaches you more than a large one raised badly.

What is the minimum order for day-old chicks?

It is set by each seller and shown on the listing — hatcheries usually sell in box sizes rather than single chicks. The minimum is on every listing page before you order.

How are chicks delivered?

Can I pay for chicks on delivery?

Yes. Cash on delivery is the default, and Mobile Money is available on Ugandan shilling listings. Nothing is charged until the order is confirmed.
