Table eggs by the tray and fertilised hatching eggs from farms on Poultrix Hub. The two are different products with different questions to ask — a table egg is judged on freshness and shell quality, a hatching egg on the flock behind it.

For table eggs, buy on freshness and handling. Eggs are usually sold by the tray of 30; ask when they were collected and how they have been stored since, because temperature swings do more damage than age alone.

For hatching eggs, you are buying the parent flock's fertility and health, not the eggs. Ask about the flock's age, the male-to-female ratio and the hatch rate the seller actually achieves — and expect eggs to be no more than about a week old, stored cool but not refrigerated.

What to check before you buy

  • Ask the collection date

    'Fresh' means nothing without a date. A seller who tracks collection dates is a seller who handles eggs properly.

  • Check shells before accepting

    Hairline cracks, thin shells and heavy soiling are all reasons to refuse. Never wash eggs you intend to hatch — it strips the protective cuticle.

  • For hatching eggs, ask for the recent hatch rate

    A seller who incubates their own eggs knows this number. One who does not know it is selling you an unknown.

  • Agree how they will be packed for the journey

    Eggs travel badly on rough roads. Trays, padding and a delivery date you can receive on are worth more than a small saving on price.

How long do fresh eggs keep?

Kept cool and unwashed, table eggs hold quality for a few weeks, but they are best eaten well within that. Consistency of storage matters more than the number of days — repeated warming and cooling ages an egg faster than steady temperature.

How old can hatching eggs be?

Hatchability falls off after about a week of storage and drops steeply from there. Buy the freshest available and set them promptly.

Should I wash eggs before setting them?

No. Washing removes the cuticle that keeps bacteria out. Choose clean eggs from clean nest boxes instead of cleaning dirty ones.

Can I order eggs in bulk?

Minimum order sizes are on each listing. For large or repeat orders, message the farm through the listing to agree quantity and a delivery schedule.
