Poultry farming: a practical starting point
Poultry farming comes down to four decisions repeated every cycle: which birds to keep, how to house them, what to feed them, and how to keep them healthy. First decision: which birds
The three common enterprises behave completely differently as businesses, not just as farming. Broilers turn cash around in about six weeks but expose the whole batch to the price on one day. Layers need roughly five months of spending before the first egg, then pay daily for a year or more. Local chickens need little capital but return slowly, and most of their improvement comes from stopping losses rather than raising output.

Second decision: housing and space
Most housing problems are really air and moisture problems. A house that is too crowded for its ventilation produces wet litter, high ammonia, damaged respiratory tracts and poor feed conversion — in that order. Work out capacity from usable floor area before you place birds, not after you notice the litter is wet.
Third decision: feed
Feed is 60–70% of the cost of producing a chicken, so it deserves the most attention and the most scepticism. Buy on price per kilogram rather than per bag, check every delivery by smell and appearance, store it off the floor and away from walls, and record what you issue daily so you can tell wastage from appetite.
Fourth decision: health
Disease usually arrives through the gate — on a person, a vehicle, a crate, or a returned bird. Biosecurity is a small set of daily habits rather than an expensive installation, and it works alongside vaccination rather than instead of it. When birds show signs of illness, involve a qualified animal health professional early; poultry diseases look alike from the outside and guessing is expensive.
