Poultry health and biosecurity: keeping disease out of your flock
Almost every serious disease outbreak on a small poultry farm arrives on something that came through the gate — a person, a vehicle, a crate, a new bird, or contaminated water. Biosecurity is not complicated or expensive; it is a small number of habits applied every single day without exception.
The principle: keep it out, keep it in, keep it down
Biosecurity has three jobs. Keep disease out of a healthy flock. Keep it in, if you have it, so it does not reach your neighbours or your next batch. And keep the background level of challenge down, so the birds' own immunity can cope with what does get through. Every practical measure below serves one of those three.
What actually works
- Control who comes inKeep visitors out of the bird area. Where they must enter, provide dedicated boots or boot covers and a working footbath. Traders and other farmers are the highest-risk visitors precisely because they visit many flocks.
- Work from young to oldAlways attend the youngest, healthiest birds first and any sick pen last. Never go back the other way in the same clothes.
- Run all-in, all-outOne age of bird on site at a time, then clean out completely and rest the house 10–14 days. Continuous stocking keeps disease circulating indefinitely.
- Never bring back unsold birdsBirds that have been to a market and returned have met every other flock at that market. This is one of the most common ways an outbreak starts.
- Quarantine any new birdsHold new arrivals separately for at least two weeks, and attend them last.
- Control rodents, wild birds and dogsWire the openings, cut vegetation back from the house, and store feed where rodents cannot reach it.
- Dispose of dead birds properlyBurn or bury deep, away from the house and water sources, on the day. Never leave carcasses where dogs or wild birds can reach them.
Water and litter: the two daily fundamentals
More flocks are damaged by dirty water and wet litter than by anything exotic. Both are entirely within a farmer's control and cost almost nothing to get right.
- Clean drinkers daily. Biofilm builds up quickly in warm conditions and carries bacteria.
- Check drinker height as the birds grow — too high and small birds cannot drink, too low and they foul and spill.
- Walk the house looking for wet patches. Fix the leak, remove the wet litter, and top up with dry material.
- Judge litter by the handful: it should be dry and crumbly. If it clumps when squeezed, it is too wet.
- If your eyes sting at bird level, ammonia is too high and birds' respiratory tracts are already being damaged.
Early warning signs

Why records are part of biosecurity
When a vet asks what happened, 'the birds started dying last week' is not useful. A daily record of mortality, feed intake, water use and anything unusual turns a vague worry into a timeline — and a timeline is often what makes a diagnosis possible. It also tells you honestly whether a change you made actually helped.
