Stocking density calculator: how many birds fit in your house
Divide usable floor area by the space each bird needs. Deep-litter broilers to 2 kg need about 0.1 m² each (10 birds per m²); deep-litter layers need about 0.15 m² each (6–7 per m²). Getting this wrong is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes in small-scale poultry.

The maximum to place. Placing above it costs more in mortality and feed conversion than the extra birds earn.
Linear feeder space at about 5 cm per bird. Round feeders count their full circumference.
About 2 cm per bird for linear drinkers. Nipple systems use roughly one nipple per 10–12 birds instead.

Calculates safe bird capacity for a house, plus the feeder and drinker space that capacity requires.

Farmers sizing a new house, or checking whether an existing house is overstocked.

- House width — Internal width of the usable bird area.
- Birds per square metre — 10 for broilers to about 2 kg on deep litter; 6–7 for deep-litter layers.
- Floor not available to birds — Feed store corner, walkway, equipment footprint.

Worked example
A 12 m by 8 m house has 96 m² of floor. Taking 5% out for the feed corner and walkway leaves 91.2 m² usable. At 10 broilers per square metre that is 912 birds — so 900 is a sensible placement. Those birds need about 45 m of feeder space and 18 m of drinker space, which is far more equipment than most farms expect at this scale.
Assumptions
- Deep-litter floor housing with natural or assisted ventilation.
- Densities quoted are for a temperate-to-warm climate with adequate airflow; a hot, still house needs fewer birds per square metre, not more.
- Feeder and drinker allowances are per bird at the heaviest point of the cycle.
Limitations
- Cage and slatted systems use completely different density rules and are not covered here.
- Local regulations or buyer welfare standards may set stricter limits than these figures. Where they do, they take precedence.
- Density interacts with ventilation. A well-ventilated house tolerates the upper end of a range; a closed, humid house does not.

What overstocking actually costs
- Wet litter, which drives footpad lesions and downgrades at sale.
- Higher ammonia, which damages the respiratory tract and opens the door to secondary infection.
- Uneven growth, because smaller birds are pushed off the feeder.
- Worse feed conversion — the extra birds each convert feed less efficiently, so the batch eats more per kilogram produced.
- Higher mortality in any heat event, because there is no thermal headroom.
The arithmetic rarely favours crowding. Adding 15% more birds to a house that is already at its limit typically costs more in feed conversion, downgrades and mortality than the extra birds return.
