Poultry vaccination: how programmes are built and why timing matters
Vaccination works by exposing birds to a safe form of a disease so their immune system is ready for the real thing. Whether it works on your farm depends on three things you control: using a vaccine suited to the diseases actually present locally, giving it at the right age, and keeping it cold and handling it correctly until the moment it is given.
How vaccination works in a flock
A vaccine presents the immune system with a harmless version of a pathogen so that antibodies and immune memory are built before the bird meets the real disease. Two consequences follow, and both matter in practice. Immunity takes time to develop — usually one to three weeks — so a vaccine given during an outbreak is too late. And immunity is a flock-level property: if a significant share of birds miss the dose, the disease can still move through the house.
Why timing is the hardest part
Chicks hatch with maternal antibodies passed from the hen. These protect the chick for the first days or weeks — and they also neutralise a live vaccine given too early, which is why vaccinating on the wrong day can produce no protection at all while looking like the job was done. This is the single most common reason a vaccination programme fails, and it is why published schedules give specific ages rather than rough windows.
Administration routes

Cold chain and handling
Most vaccines are biological products that lose potency when they get warm, and a vaccine that has lost potency looks exactly like one that has not. Handling is therefore not a detail — it is the difference between a protected flock and a false sense of security.
- Keep vaccine cold from purchase to administration; carry it in a cool box with ice packs, not loose in a bag.
- Never freeze a vaccine unless the label specifically requires it.
- Keep vials out of direct sunlight at all times, including while you work.
- Reconstitute only what you will use within the time stated on the label.
- Use clean, disinfectant-free water for water-administered vaccines.
- Dispose of unused reconstituted vaccine and empty vials safely — do not tip them out near the birds or a water source.
Recording what you gave
Write down the vaccine name, batch number, expiry date, the date and age of birds, the route used, and how many birds received it. When something goes wrong later, this record is the first thing a vet will ask for. It is also required or expected in many market and export contexts.
